Formby is an old Viking village and traditionally thought to have been settled when, after the Anglo-Saxons had defeated them at the coast, the Vikings sailed up the river Alt and took them by surprise by attacking from the rear. The village was originally known as ‘Fornebei’ a Viking word meaning ‘village which belongs to the family Forni’ and was built on the plains overlooking the beautiful Irish Sea Coast. The area is popular in the summer months with tourists attracted to the stunning sand dunes and beaches. The woods and coast are filled with rare wildlife like the native red squirrel and natterjack toads, and many travel to the area just to enjoy sightings of these.
